Books on Tape and Audio Cassettes
Each branch has a collection of books on tape available for checkout. A small collection of music
cassette tapes is also available. Many more audio cassette tapes are available by ordering from our
Listen-In catalog.
California Indian Collection
Copies of rare and out-of-print books, documents, photographs, and recordings made from the
extensive materials located in the research collections of the University of California, Berkeley.
The collection is available at the main library for in-library use only. Indexing of the collection is
available at the main library and branches.
Census Microfilm
Census microfilm for Shasta County is available at the main library for the 1790-1920 censuses.
For other census films, the Library can borrow microfilm from the California State Library and the
Sutro State Genealogical Library, for use in the main library or in branches.
College Catalogs on microfiche
The catalogs of over 4000 accredited schools in the United States and its territories are available on
microfiche. This includes undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. Besides the nation's
colleges and universities, it also includes junior, technical, and community colleges.
Consumer Information
The Library has a wide variety of consumer information which includes "Consumer Reports", "Kelly
Blue Books", small claims court resources, how-to manuals, and pamphlets from various
government agencies.
Genealogy
The Library has a collection of reference genealogy materials which include family name sources,
geographical sources, census microfilm, and the California Death Index.
A Shasta Genealogy Society volunteer is available to assist patrons every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m.
Government Documents
The main Library is a depository for selected Local, State, and Federal documents. The Library was designated a selective Federal Depository for Congressional
District 2 in 1956.
Large Print Books
Large print books are available at the main library and all branches.
Local History
Each branch has a collection of Shasta County history materials, including the "Covered Wagon"
and its indexes. The main library has an extensive collection of Northern California history and
Californiana.
Magazines
The Library subscribes to over 300 magazine titles. Articles in titles not in our collection are usually
available through interlibrary loan photocopying.
Magazine Article Summaries, a CD-Rom index available at the main library, indexes 499 current,
popular magazines. The main library and the branches also offer a paper index to magazines called
Readers Guide.
Newspapers
The Library subscribes to all County newspapers. In addition, the main library subscribes to the
Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor. There
is no newspaper indexing available.
The main library maintains a collection of Shasta County newspapers on microfilm beginning with
1852. Some issues of the Anderson Valley News are available on microfilm at the Anderson branch.
Telephone Directories
The main library maintains a collection of directories for all of California and major U.S. cities. The
branches maintain smaller collections of directories.
